Tessa ran her hands along the worn keys of the grand piano. She was alone in the music room. The Institute was quiet, settling down for the night. The silence felt empty and she found herself wishing she knew how to play. She shut her eyes, caressing the keys, as if she were only choosing a melody and would start playing in a moment.
“Wondering how to play?”
Tessa smiled at the soft voice, but didn’t open her eyes. “Yes, actually. The silence seems too empty tonight.”
Slim hands covered her own, warm and gentle, as Jem placed her hands to the keys. “Here.” His voice was right next to her ea
"Tessa?" Will knocked on her door, which was slightly ajar, but there was no answer. After a few moments, he knocked again. The silence remained absolute. Will supposed she must be in the library or the music room, but he pushed her door open, just to be sure.
As expected, the room was empty and neatly made up by Sophie. In the few months Tessa had been here, she had added touches of herself to the room. There were piles of books next to the bed and on the desk, along with plenty of paper, ink, and pens. She'd been writing. He wondered what she'd written of, recalling her letters to her brother, the letters he had taken, then lost.
